Festival feedback
Thanks for a fantastic festival last summer! I only participated for 4 days but they were 4 unbelievably fun and worthwhile days. In fact it was my best vacation ever. Next year I plan to come for the whole two weeks and I really look forward to that! Jolith
HiFor those of you who are thinking about participating in the yoga festival on Oland-don’t hesitate. It’s a wonderfully beautiful place to be. Nightingales and blackbirds compete to see which of them can sing the most beautifully, they must also compete with the singing yogis. The open sea meets the ancient forest and miles of sandy beach. Fresh baked bread at the breakfast café each morning and friendly people. And all the superb yoga of course. Don’t miss it! Lotta
Yoga festival with peace, love and understanding…
--A participant’s story
On a big rock in the shallow water near the shore a naked woman sits and sings. The day has barely begun and I am full of breathless expectation. The wide bay opens up toward the east where the sun has begun to color the heavens pink. The water is still, glowing and light blue. The white sand cools my feet and the air is still cool, but the woman on the rock doesn’t seem to mind. It’s the summer festival on the island of Oland and time for Sadhana on the beach. Several sleepy individuals stroll down from the tents, tipis, trailers and cottages on the campground. They roll out their yoga mats and blankets. Most of them have at least two layers of clothes on from head to toe. Harnam Singh lays out his sheepskin and sets up his cd player. We are supposed to begin at 3.45 AM, but this particular morning we are all standing speechless as we view the miraculous sight in the east. The golden ball rises up out of the sea and lays a carpet of gold towards us on the beach. The sky is now an intensive shade of pink and colors everyone’s faces. The dampness from the night still has its grip on the sand, while the air is slowly surrendering to the light and warmth. The birds awaken and begin to sing with us.
A lot of Choices
This is the fifth year in a row for this festival on Northern Oland. Every year the number of participants has doubled and now is about 350 people. During these two weeks in June the program offers different forms of yoga and meditation several times a day. There is also Heart dance, Free dance, Sacred Dance, Belly dance, Non-violent communication, The Work, Song, Rebirthing, Qigong, Osho meditations, Aum, Living intimacy, Drama improvisation, Sufi dance, Deeksha, Voicing, Bioenergetics, Yellow Bamboo, Yoga for kids, Overtones singing, Laughter yoga, EBT-Yuen method, Sweat lodge, Sauna, and fires on the beach with song and music in the evenings. And even more…
Friendly atmosphere
The atmosphere made me think of the hippie camps of another era, with streams of friendly, peaceful and happy people of all ages, clothed in light, comfortable clothes or almost no clothes at all. No hard words, no arguments or clashes anywhere. Peace, love and understanding from morning to night. All in a pleasant tempo, despite the full schedule. Every morning we checked the posted program for the day and had a tough time choosing between all the parallel activities. One had to fit together the puzzle pieces! And still have time to enjoy the beach. Or perhaps an outing to sightsee on the beautiful island of Oland. And to socialize. Meet new friends. Eat delicious meals. Buy cds and other items. Get a massage out on the grass. And sleep a little before sadhana at 3.45 AM. Elisabeth Magnusson
…And Sweat- report from a sweat lodge
The last sweat lodge of the Yoga festival was going to be the long kind. 4 hours in strong heat and total darkness. Me, who doesn’t even care to stay in the sauna for any length of time. Would I dare? After several wonderful days at the yoga festival Elisabeth and I met Tim Jago. We met Tim when we studied yoga in Gothenburg. Tim has studied the Celtic tradition of shamanism and after 7 years of study is eligible to lead the guided meditation that takes place inside the sweat lodge. This was one of the activities at the festival. We gathered down at the beach at 5PM to build the lodge that we would eventually crawl into. It was the woman’s task to build the structure, which was to symbolize both the uterus and the grave. The foundation consisted of branches formed like an igloo. We covered the form with blankets and tarps. Layer upon layer so not the slightest ray of light can penetrate. There was a tiny entrance to the west and an exit towards the east. In order to enter one had to lie down in the sand and snake oneself in, and once in there was no escaping. The men built a beautiful alter outside the exit door to the east and gathered together the stones which would be placed in the fire to be heated and then carried to the pit in the middle of the lodge to heat it up. When we had completed our work we scattered until we were to meet again 7PM. Meditation on life Many thoughts flew through my head during this hour. Would I dare crawl in there in the darkness and in the heat. Maybe I should just leave, or…? No, you have to do this you coward. What are you afraid of? Yes, you’re perhaps afraid of losing control. That’s the problem. The voices repeated themselves in my confused mind. Which voice would win? When it was 7PM I was down on the beach with a beating heart and shaky legs. Tim went carefully through what would happen and the theme was death. The Indians had started doing sweat lodges in order to come as close as possible to the experience of death. We were now going to do the same thing. We would first have an hour for ourselves in which we would meditate on our lives and prepare us for our impending death. Tim would not guarantee that we would come through this alive. The thought was frightening and the reality we actually live in became very tangible. The only thing e know for sure is that we live here and now. What you haven’t said or done at this point you might never get another chance to do or say. Why didn’t I call Thomas before I came? I was in such a hurry when he called that I didn’t have time to talk with him. “Bye now, I’ll call you later…” Later?
Facing death
Now it was 8 o’clock and we were to gather outside the lodge in a ring. The sun was still high in the sky and it’s reflection was beautiful in the sea. The sand was so white and the water so blue. Think if I never see this again? We are invited to leave if we want to. Tim is very clear and now is the time to change our mind, not later. I am now convinced. I want to meet my fear and understand that at this very moment I have an opportunity to move forward on my path. To dare to live so that it will be easier to die. Yes, this is how I feel here outside the lodge. The people taking care of the fire are standing outside of the lodge an the stones are glowing. Naked and shivering we creep in, one after the other has been purified in a special ceremony. It is very crowded in the darkness. We are over 20 people who are to share this small space. We are sitting very close to each other and it begins to feel as though our bodies are stuck to each other. Now that everyone has found his place, Tim asks for the stones to be brought in. They glow in the dark and I feel the intense heat spread itself throughout the space. It’s the final opportunity to leave before the flap is closed. A few leave and I feel relieved because now I have a little more space. It’s pitch black, only the glow from the stones gives a little light. Tim crumbles some herbs onto the hot stones and a wonderful aroma fills the air. It begins to get very hot. I can’t change my mind. The trip has begun…
The journey
Tim guides us in our journey. Many thoughts and feelings surface. Now and then the flaps open to receive more stones and the heat continues. Time no longer matters. Being is all there is. Suddenly Tim asks that the eastern door be opened. Four hours have passed. What is four hours? Does time exist in a sweat lodge? Outside time has continued and the sky is now dark. It’s not the sun but the stars that are reflected in the sea. We gather quietly around the altar and it feels as if something meaningful has taken place. Laughing we run out into the water and try to get rid of all the sand that is stuck to us. The night is quiet and still when we walk home. Each to his own, each with his own experience. Life is great! Inger Holmgren
Dance with heart and flow at Harnam’s yoga festival
It’s a morning in the beginning of June. On northern Oland the yoga festival has just awakened. People who have traveled here from near and far have set up tents despite the ocean winds. This is the 6th year of this festival at Kyrketorps Camping in Boda village. In Boda there are farms, a school, lots of sheep and a bakery that is always inviting me to visit with its aroma from freshly baked spelt bread, cinnamon buns and foccacia. The campground is big with lots of trees. It’s on Boda bay which has the whitest sand on it’s beaches. This morning Harnam Singh is sitting in the reception tent with his turban and sunglasses on. The participants are registering and he greets them warmly as old friends. On the nearby lawn Mattis Olsson from Helsingborg has tuned his guitar. –may I take peaceful steps upon the earth…may I take peaceful steps upon the earth…, he is singing and the people dancing around him are singing along. It sounds touching but hopeful. We did this Heart dance at the opening of the festival the previous night. As we danced together we looked into each others eyes, and quickly one knew half of the people who had arrived at the festival. The festival has begun to awaken in the morning sun. People move down from the big lawn and reception area to the beach, to the bakery to eat breakfast, to the tents and cottages scattered in all directions. Many different workshops are on the program such as dance, meditation, drum journey and yoga. We gather in different places such as the schools gym, the big chill-out tent, on one of the big lawns or on the beach. The festival has no clear boundary separating it from the general public. There are no fences. A sign of a participant seems to be a rolled up yoga mat under the arm, aside from that there are many styles, ages and personalities. Where you see groups of people gathered in intense conversation you can assume it’s the festival. And people are doing that all over the place. Days pass and more people show up. The festival program continues to be more varied—family constellations, sharing groups, non-violent communication, sweat lodge on the beach, dance workshops of all sorts, varied forms of yoga and meditations. The evenings are full of performances, song, dance and humor. The folks at Harnam’s festival seem to take it easy. There’s peacefulness in the air, even when the dances get more and more intensive or when laughter and racket fills the air. Lin Holmqvist from Orebro is sitting in the grass and eating. This is her first time at the festival. She had heard about it earlier; that it was supposed to be good. Then she met Harnam who invited her to come and teach yoga. Lin is a hatha yoga teacher and a yoga therapist. “For me this festival means joy, energy, love, friendship and a lot of fun. It is so easy to meet people because they all come here with similar intentions. And the exercises in the workshops bring us closer together. I think people here are honest,” she says. On the other side of the lawn Mattis is sitting and talking with Regina Drottenmyr from Huddinge. This is the second year that Mattis is here. He is a musician and performs in the evenings, during heart dance and any other time he gets an opportunity. He met Harnam at another festival and was asked to come.
